Colombia, which has 1898 species of birds, is the country with the most species of birds in the world. This natural wealth is positioning the country as one of the best destinations for bird watching tourism. The presence of 72 species of endemic birds, the country’s beautiful geography and its growing capacity at the local and regional levels to address this specialized segment of tourists make Colombia a very interesting country. Cali hosts the most important bird fair in Colombia, due to its proximity to diverse ecosystems, which increase the possibilities of observing more bird species. This 5-day trip  is appropriate for anyone. Amateur, professionals, or people with no experience at all. The only thing that matters is that you like birds, flowers, and wonderful landscapes. We’ll make sure your trip to Colombia is fun; fun is guaranteed.

Level of difficultyWe’ll be walking between 1 and 3 hours, mild physical activity. Nothing strenuous.

Comfort level: Basic,Standard. We’ll use comfortable, pleasant and clean Eco Lodges, and Hotels.

Disposition level:Adventure. One must be willing to leave some comfort to go deeper into nature. Most of our destinations preserve their authenticity and have not been permeated by mass tourism. To fully enjoy the destinations traveler should be willing to engage with the place and its hosts.

On this  five-day expedition we'll visit the Cloud Forest in the first two days (Bitaco Forest Reserve, Villa Alexandria and Lek of the Cock Rock (Andean Cock of the Rock), where we may see Andean Mot Mot , Black capped Tanager, Blue winged Mountain Tanager, Multicolored Tanager, Saffron Crowned Tanager. also birds like Red Headed Barbet, Crimson Rumped Toucanet, Collared Trogon, Andean Cock of the Rock, among other species.

On the third day we'll visit the area of Queremal and Anchicayá basin (one of the most important birding areas of Colombia), located in the Farallones National Park. There we'll have the opportunity to see Grey and Golden Tanager, Blue-whiskered Tanager, Choco Trogon, White-wiskered Hermit, Tooth-billed Hummingbird, Lemon- spectacled Tanager, Choco Toucan, Golden-chested Tanager.

The fourth day we'll go to the subtropical jungle of San Cipriano, a beautiful reserve near the Pacific coast that has one of the ten most beautiful rivers in the world. Here we might see Striped billed Aracari, Rose Faced Parrot, White tailed trogon, Green Kingfisher, Black Breasted Puffbird, Blue Fronted Parrolet, Coloured Five Barbet among others.

Finally, on our fifth day, we'll go to the Sonso Lagoon, an aquatic complex that has historically served as a system of natural regulation of the Cauca River. This Nature Reserve was designated as an area of ​​importance for birds by BirdLife International and is part of the dry forest ecosystem and the wetlands of the Cauca river. This day we could see Yellow Crested Cara Cara headed and, Ringed King Fisher, Cocoi (white-Necked Heron), Striated Heron, Jet Antbird, Pied Water Tyrant, and Red-Breasted Blackbird, among other beautiful birds.


Day 1: Chicoral - Bitaco- La Minga

We'll pick you up at the airport (or Hotel) at 10:00 am, from where we'll go to La Minga Eco-lodge in the Bitaco Forest Reserve (between 1300 and 2000 masl / Average temperature 18° C), where we'll check in and have lunch. In the afternoon we will observe birds at the feeders and trails close to the  Ecolodge. 

We will have many chances to see Tanagers of many colors, such as Saffron Crowned Tanager, endemic Multicolored Tanager, near endemic Scrub Tanager, Flame Rumped Tanager, and more. You might also see Acorn Woodpecker, Scarlet fronted Parakeet, Andean Motmot, Rufous collared sparrow, endemic Colombian Chachalaca, Blackburnian Warbler, and Golden headed Quetzal among others species.

La Minga, which is located in the middle of the forest, is a cozy, quiet Ecolodge that has comfortable and clean rooms, private bathroom, and hot water.


Day 2: Finca Alejandría & Cock of the Rock Lek

We’ll depart La Minga at 6:00 am and head to the Finca Alejandria at Km 18 . Finca Alexandria is a Country House and one of the best places for bird watching; so much so, that it’s known as “The Hummingbird Paradise”.

Here we’ll have the chance to see different hummingbird species, such as the hard to find Blue headed Sapphire, Brown Violetear, Long Tailed Sylph, Booted Racket-Tail, Buff-tailed Coronet, Speckled Hummingbird, Tawny- Bellied Hermit, and Green Crowned Woodnymph, among others.

Since Finca Alexandria lies in the middle of a wonderful cloud forest, we’ll also see other birds, such as:

Red Headed Barbet, Blue Winged Mountain Tanager, endemic Multicolored Tanager , Chestnut Woodquail, and Colombian Chachalaca, also Crimson and Emerald Toucanet, Road Side Hawk, Collared Trogon, Spotted Barbtail, Montane Woodcreeper, Variagated Bristle Tyrant, Green and Black Fruiteater, Golden winged Manakin and the magnificent Golden headed Quetzal, among many others.

In the afternoon we’ll go near the village of Felidia, where we can find the Lek of the Andean Cock of the Rock and the magnificent endemic Crested Ant Tanager.

At the end of the afternoon we will drive to the El Campanario Hotel, a comfortable, quiet, clean hotel with private bathrooms and Hot water.

Day 3: Old Buena Ventura Road (Anchicayá- El Descanso)

The Anchicayá river basin is part of Los Farallones National Park and one of the most important Birding spots in Colombia.

We will start our day at 5:00 am and have breakfast in a small local restaurant with Bird feeders. There we can see birds like Chestnut-Headed Oropendola, near endemic Black Mountain Chinned Tanager, Glistening green Tanager, Silver Throated Tanager, and, if we are lucky, the Toucan Barbet.

From there we'll descend to the subtropical jungle and reach a town called el Danubio, where we'll continue birding on the road. We might see Crested Ant Tanager, Rufous Motmot, Laughing Falcon, Choco Toucan, Collared Aracari,Cinnamon Woodpecker, Rufous Tailed Jacamar, Blue-Tailed Trogon, and, perhapts, the famous Long Wattled Umbrellabird.

At dusk we'll return to the hotel El Campanario.

Day 4: San Cipriano

We will leave the hotel at 4:30 am and take the road to the Pacific Ocean. In 1:30 hours we will  arrive to Cordoba, a town where we will take a Brujita (little witch in Spanish) that  will take us to San Cipriano. A Brujita is a wooden cart that goes on the railroad propelled by a motorcycle. It’s a whole lot of fun and the only way to get to the Forest Reserve of San Cipriano.

Once in San Cipriano, we’ll hike through different paths next to the San Cipriano River, where we’ll see all kinds of birds, such as:

Stripe Bellied Aracari, Rose Faced Parrot, Chestnut Headed Oropendola, Blue Fronted Parrotlet, Black breasted Puffbird, White tailed trogon, Scarlet and white Tanager, Grey and Gold Tanager,  Emerald Tanager  and Blue  Whiskered Tanager.

Around noon we'll take a break to enjoy the river's crystal clear emerald waters. After lunch we'll drive to Buga where we will stay in the Hotel Boutique Chrisban, a very nice hotel that has a swimming pool, modern rooms with TV, bathroom, air conditioning, and wifi.

Day 5: Sonso Lagoon

On our fifth day we’ll go to Sonso Lagoon, a wetland ecosystem with a dry forest that is home to hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.

We’ll leave the hotel at 5:30 am and arrive to the lagoon around 6am. We will have our breakfast on the trail and watch birds all morning. Here we may spot different species, such as

Rubi Topaz, Amazon Kingfisher, Anhinga, Bar Crested Antshrike, Jet Antbird, Cocoi Heron, Bare Faced Ibis, Striated Heron, Yellow Headed Cara Cara, Crested Cara Cara, Purple Gallinule, Spectacled parrotlet, Wattled Jacana , Striped Cuckoo, Smooth-billed Ani, Dark billed Cuckoo, Dwarf Cuckoo, Red breasted Blackbird, Fork Tailed Flycatcher, Common Potoo, Yellow Oriole, Red Capped Cardinal among others.

We’ll leave the lagoon around noon and have lunch in Buga. Afterwards, we'll go to the hotel (or airport, depending on your needs), and bid you farewell.
