On this five-day expedition we will visit the cloud Forest in the first two days (Bitaco Forest Reserve, Villa Alexandria and Lek of the Cock Rock (Andean Cock of the Rock) .In these beautiful forests we may see Andean Mot Mot , Black capped Tanager, Blue winged Mountain Tanager, Multicolored Tanager, Saffron Crowned Tanager. also birds like Red Headed Barbet, Crimson Rumped Toucanet, Collared Trogon, Andean Cock of the Rock etc. on the third day we will visit the area of Queremal and Anchicayá basin (one of the most important birding areas of Colombia), located in the Farallones National Park. There we can see birds like Grey and Golden Tanager, Blue-whiskered Tanager, Choco Trogon, White-wiskered Hermit, Tooth-billed Hummingbird, Lemon- spectacled Tanager, Choco Toucan, Golden-chested Tanager. the fourth day will go to the subtropical jungle of San Cipriano. a beautiful reserve near the Pacific coast has one of the ten most beautiful rivers in the world. Here we can see Striped billed Aracari, Rose Faced Parrot, White tailed trogon, Green Kingfisher, Black Breasted Puffbird, Blue Fronted Parrolet, Coloured Five Barbet among others. Finally the fifth day we will go toSonso Lagoon an aquatic complex that has historically served as a system of natural regulation of the Cauca River. This Nature Reserve was designated as an area of importance for birds by BirdLife International and is part of the dry forest ecosystem and the wetlands of the Cauca river. This day we may see birds like Yellow Crested Cara Cara headed and, Ringed King Fisher, Cocoi (white-Necked Heron), Striated Heron, Jet Antbird, Pied Water Tyrant, and Red-Breasted Blackbird among others.
Day 1 Chicoral - Bitaco- La Minga
Airport Pick-up (or Hotel pick-up) at 10:00 am. Transfer to Eco-lodge La Minga in Bitaco Forest Reserve. (between 1300 and 2000 masl / Average temperature 18 ° C) Check in and lunch. In the afternoon we will observe birds at the feeders and trails close to the Ecolodge.
We will have many chances to see Tanagers of many colors as Saffron Crowned Tanager, endemic Multicolored Tanager, near endemic Scrub Tanager, Flame Rumped Tanager, and more. You may see also Acorn Woodpecker, Scarlet fronted Parakeet, Andean Motmot, Rufous collared sparrow, endemic Colombian Chachalaca, Blackburnian Warbler, Golden headed Quetzal among others . Day 2 Finca Alejandría & Cock of the Rock Lek
Departure at 6:00 am to the Finca Alexandria at Km 18 . The Finca(country House) Alexandria is one of the best places for bird watching . No wonder it is called "The Paradise of the Hummingbirds" and this is where we can see species of hummingbirds like Brown Violetear, Long Tailed Sylph, Booted Racket-Tail, Buff-tailed Coronet, Speckled Hummingbird, Tawny- Bellied Hermit, Green crowned woodnymph among others . The Finca Alexandria it is in the middle of a wonderful cloud forest where we can also see birds like Red Headed Barbet, Blue Winged Mountain Tanager, endemic Multicolored Tanager and Colombian Chachalaca, Crimson and Emerald Toucanet, Road Side Hawk, Collared Trogon, and the magnificent Golden headed and Crested Quetzal. In the afternoon we will go close to the village of Felidia where we can find the Lek of the Andean Cock of the Rock.At the end of the afternoon we will drive to the hotel El Campanario (comfortable,quiet and clean, private bathroom with Hot water) Includes: (Breakfast / lunch / dinner) Guide (English), transportation in air-conditioned 4x4 private vehicle, entrance to the Finca Alexandria and Leck Cock of the Rock, guided bird watching, binoculars (if needed), and accommodation at the Hotel EL Campanario.
Day 3 Old Buena Ventura Road (Anchicayá- El Descanso)
Anchicayá river basin is part of Los Farallones National Park and is one of the most important places for Birding in Colombia. We will leave at 5:00 am and have breakfast in a small local restaurant with Bird feeders. There we can see birds like Chestnut-Headed Oropendola, near endemic Black Mountain Chinned Tanager, Glistening green Tanager, Silver Throated Tanager and if we are lucky we can see the Toucan Barbet. From there we descend to the subtropical jungle and reach a town called The Danube from where we will continue birding on the road. In this way we can see Crested Ant Tanager, Rufous Motmot, Laughing Falcon, Choco Toucan, Collared Aracari,Cinnamon Woodpecker, Rufous Tailed Jacamar, Blue-Tailed Trogon, and if we are lucky the famous Long Wattled Umbrellabird. At dusk we will return to the hotel El Campanario. Day 4 San Cipriano
We will leave the hotel at 4:30 am and take the road to the Pacific Ocean. In 1:30 hours we will arrive to Cordoba, a town where we will take the Brujita (little witch in spanish) that will take us to San Cipriano. The trip with the brujita is a fun adventure. The Brujita is a wooden cart that goes on the railroad propelled by a motorcycle and is the only way to be transported to the Forest Reserve of San Cipriano. We will go walk on different paths beside the River San Cipriano. Birds such as Stripe Bellied Aracari, Rose Faced Parrot, Chestnut Headed Oropendola, Blue Fronted Parrotlet, Black breasted Puffbird, White tailed trogon, Scarlet and white Tanager, Grey and Gold Tanager, Emerald Tanager and Blue Whiskered Tanager . Around noon we will make a break to enjoy the crystal clear river emerald. After lunch we will drive to Buga where we will stay in the Hotel Boutique Chrisban, a very nice hotel that has a swimming pool, modern rooms with TV, bathroom, air conditioning, wifi. It Includes: (Breakfast / lunch / dinner) Guide (English) , transportion by air-conditioned 4x4 private vehicle, guided bird watching, binoculars, entrance to the forest reserve, Brujita Transportation, and accommodation at the hotel Chrisban in Buga.
Finally the fifth day we will go to Sonso Lagoon, a wetland ecosystem with a dry forest that is home to hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds. We will leave the hotel at 5:30 am to get to the lagoon at 6am. We will have our breakfast on the trail. We will be watching birds all morning, we may see species such as Amazon Kingfisher, Anhinga, Bar Crested Antshrike, Jet Antbird, Cocoi Heron, Bare Faced Ibis, Striated Heron, Yellow Headed Cara Cara, Crested Cara Cara, Purple Gallinulle, Spectacled parrotlet, Wattled Jacana , Striped Cuckoo, Smooth-billed Ani, Dark billed Cuckoo, Dwarf Cuckoo, Red breasted Blackbird, Fork Tailed Flycatcher, Common Potoo, Yellow Oriole, Red Capped Cardinal among others. We will leave the lagoon around noon and have lunch in Buga. From there we will go to the hotel (or airport, depending on the needs of travelers), thereby we will be ending at 4:00 pm our tour.
