Colombia, which has 1898 species of birds, is the country with the most species of birds in the world. This natural wealth is positioning the country as one of the best destinations for bird watching tourism. The presence of 72 species of endemic birds, the country’s beautiful geography and its growing capacity at the local and regional levels to address this specialized segment of tourists make Colombia a very interesting country. Cali hosts the most important bird fair in Colombia, due to its proximity to diverse ecosystems, which increase the possibilities of observing more bird species.

This 11-day  trip  is appropriate for anyone; amateurs, professionals, or people with no experience at all. All that matters is that you like birds, flowers, and wonderful landscapes. We'll make sure that your trip to Colombia is fun; travel fun guaranteed.

Duration:11 days, 10 nights

Level of difficulty: We’ll be walking between 1 and 3 hours, mild physical activity. Nothing strenuous.

Comfort level: Basic,Standard. We’ll use comfortable, pleasant and clean Eco Lodges, Hostels, and Hotels

Disposition level: Adventure. One must be willing to leave some comfort to go deeper into nature. Most of our destinations preserve their authenticity and have not been permeated by mass tourism. To fully enjoy the destinations, travelers should be willing to engage with the place and its hosts.

    In this 11-day expedition we may see endemic birds, like the Colombian Chachalaca. Multicolored Tanager, Crested Ant Tanager, Greyish piculet, Cauca Guan, and Chestnut Wood-Quail. 

    We might also see near endemic birds, such as: Rose Faced Parrots, Blue Tailed Trogon, Toucan Barbet, Choco Toucan, Long-wattled Umbrellabird, Beautiful Jay, Flame Rumped Tanager, Blue Whiskered Tanager, and many other beautiful birds. 

    You'll visit and experience being in different ecosystems, namely: tropical humid forest, tropical dry forest, cloud forest, and Paramo. In this trip, you'll get to know firsthand the amazing San Cipriano river and its pristine emerald green waters, the stunning orchid varieties at the Orquideas del Valle Greenhouse, spectacular hot springs and the paramo landscape (more than 3000 masl), the unique landscape of the Cocora Valley and its wax palms, as well as the magical atmosphere of the Colombian coffee region. 



    Day 1: Bitaco Forest Reserve 

    We'll pick you up at Cali's airport, Alfonso Bonilla Aragon, at 9:00 am. From there, we'll go to La Minga Eco-lodge, a country house owned by Gustavo Londoño, a post Phd in Biology and a very good birder, that lies in the Bitaco Forest Reserve (1300-2000 masl / Average temperature 18° C).

    After we check in and lunch, we'll observe the birds at the Ecolodge's feeders and trails. We'll may see Saffron Crowned Tanager, endemic Multicolored Tanager, Flame Rumped Tanager, Acorn Woodpecker, Scarlet fronted Parakeet, Andean Motmot, Scrub Tanager, Rufous collared sparrow, endemic Colombian Chachalaca, Blackburnian Warbler, among other birds.

     La Minga Ecolodge is a cozy, quiet Country House with clean rooms and hot water. The Ecolodge is in the middle of the reserve and it is the ideal place to relax after a good day of bird watching. 



    Day 2: Finca Alejandría and Cock of the Rock Lek

    We’ll depart La Minga at 6:00 am and head to the Finca Alejandria at Km 18 (to the Buenaventura Road). Finca Alexandria is a Country House and one of the best places for bird watching; so much so, that it’s known as “The Hummingbird Paradise”. Here we’ll have the chance to see different hummingbird species, such as:

    The hard to find Blue headed Sapphire, the Brown Violetear, the Long Tailed Sylph, the Booted Racket-Tail, the Buff-tailed Coronet, the Speckled Hummingbird, the Tawny- Bellied Hermit, and the Green crowned woodnymph, among others.

    Since Finca Alexandria lies in the middle of a wonderful cloud forest, we’ll also see other birds, such as: Red Headed Barbet, Blue Winged Mountain Tanager, endemic Multicolored Tanager, Crimson and Emerald Toucanet, Roadside Hawk, Collared Trogon, and the magnificent Golden headed and Crested Quetzal, to name just a few. 

    In the afternoon we’ll be near the village of Felidia, where we can find the Lek of the Andean Cock of the Rock and the magnificent endemic Crested Ant Tanager.

    At sunset we will  travel to the El Peñón Hotel in Cali.

    Day 3: Páramo Puracé

    The Puracé National Park is located in the Andean Region of Colombia (3000 –  4500 masl.), southeast of the city of Popayán.

    We'll leave the hotel in Cali at 4:30 am and  arrive to Puracé at 8:00am where we will have breakfast.

    Then we’ll visit the Condor rock to feed and see the magnificent Condor (there's a 50% chance we'll get to see it). Watching this majestic bird soaring the sky above the spectacular cliffs of the Colombian Andes is an experience that will leave you amazed. After that, we will enjoy the beautiful scenery of this unique ecosystem: the magical Puracé Moorland, with it’s mystical mist above the San Rafael lagoon and the fantastic landscape of the San Juan hot-springs.

    We'll go birding around the trails, where we may find Scarlet bellied Mountain Tanager, Black chested Mountain Tanager, Orange-billed nightingale Thrush,  Golden rumped Euphonia, and many other species.

    We'll have lunch and go to the hotel at Coconuco and relax.

    Day 4: Coconuco- Popayán

    The fourth day we'll have Breakfast at 8:00 am and go visit the wonderful thermal pools of Coconuco in the morning. 

    We‘ll have lunch in Popayán and walk its downtown area,  which is considered one of the most beautiful and well preserved colonial areas in Latin America. There we will see the colonial architectural jewels of ”The White City”. 

    We'll leave Popayán at 3:00 pm so that we can arrive to the El Peñón Hotel in Cali by 7:00 pm and rest.

    Day 5: San Antonio Forest and Orchid Greenhouse 

    On Day 5, we'll leave the hotel at 9 am to visit one of the most important orchid greenhouses in Colombia, where we'll see hundred of different orchid varieties. 

    After lunch we'll go birding and visit an Orchid greenhouse at the San Antonio forest. There we might see Golden Tanager, Metallic green tanager, ashy throated bush tanager, Andean Motmot, Squirrel Cuckoo, Greyish Piculet, and other species. 

    From there we'll go to the Condominio Campestre Villas del 30 Hotel.

    Day 6: Queremal and Anchicayà

    The Anchicaya river basin is part of Los Farallones National Park and one of the most important Birding spots in Colombia.

    We'll leave the hotel at 5:00 am and have breakfast in a small local Tienda with Bird feeders. There, will be bird from the road and might see Chestnut-Headed Oropendola, near endemic Black Mountain Chinned Tanager, Glistening green Tanager, Silver Throated Tanager, and, if we are lucky, the Toucan Barbet.

    We will then descend to the subtropical jungle and reach a town called El Danubio, where we'll continue birding on the road. We might be able to spot endemic Crested Ant Tanager, Rufous Motmot, Laughing Falcon, Choco Toucan, Collared Aracari, Solitary Eagle, Rufous Tailed Jacamar, Blue-Tailed Trogon, and the famous Long Wattled Umbrellabird.

    At dusk we'll return to the Villas del 30 Hotel.

    Day 7: San Cipriano

    We'll leave the hotel at 4:00 am and take the road to the Pacific Ocean. In Aprox 1:30 hours we'll arrive to Córdoba, an afro Colombian town, where we will take a Brujita (little witch in Spanish) that  will take us to San Cipriano. A Brujita is a wooden cart that goes on the railroad propelled by a motorcycle. It’s a whole lot of fun and the only way to get to the Forest Reserve of San Cipriano.

    Once in San Cipriano, we’ll hike through different paths next to the San Cipriano River, where we can see all kinds of birds, such as: Stripe Billed Aracari, Rose Faced Parrot, Chestnut Headed Oropendola, Blue Fronted Parrotlet, Puffbird breasted Black, White tailed trogon, Scarlet and white Tanager, Grey and Gold Tanager, Blue and Emerald Tanager Tanager Whiskered.

    We'll take a break around noon to enjoy the waters of this emerald crystal clear river.

    After lunch, we'll head to Buga, where we'll be staying at the Hotel Boutique Chrisban.

    Day 8: Sonso Lagoon

    On the 8th day we will go to Sonso Lagoon, a wetland ecosystem and dry forest that is home to hundreds of species of resident and migratory birds.

    We’ll leave the hotel at 5:30 am and arrive to the lagoon around 6am. We will have our breakfast on the trail and watch birds all morning. Here we may spot different species, such as the Amazon Kingfisher, Anhinga, Bar Crested Antshrike, Jet Antbird, Cocoi Heron, Bare Faced Ibis, Striated Heron, Yellow Headed Caracara, Crested Caracara, Purple Gallinule, Spectacled parrotlet, Wattled Jacana , Striped Cuckoo, Smooth-billed Ani, Dark billed Cuckoo, Dwarf Cuckoo, Red breasted Blackbird, Fork Tailed Flycatcher, Common Potoo, Yellow Oriole, and Red Capped Cardinal, among others.

    We'll leave the lagoon around noon and have lunch in Buga. Then we’ll go to Salento. Salento is one of the main tourist destinations in Colombia. The magical landscape of the Cocora Valley, the diversity of birds, and colorful architecture of the Colombian coffee region make this a must in your visit to Colombia.

    We’ll arrive to Salento, leave our luggage at the hotel and begin our sightseeing adventure. We’ll go to the miradores and the town's beautiful downtown with its authentic, colorful architecture.

    After Dinner we will rest at the Villa Isabel Hotel, a beautiful place with an incredible view of the Cocora valley.

    Day 9: Cocora Valley Salento

    We'll have breakfast around 6:00am and leave the hotel for a fantastic trek in the Cocora Valley and its surrounding hillsides. The Cocora Valley is home to many wax palms, the national tree and symbol of Colombia. They are some of the tallest palms in the world and a very worthy sight.

    There we may See Black Billed Mountain Toucan, Collared Trogon, Bronze winged parrot, Black collared Jay. 

    We'll have lunch and return to Salento to relax in the afternoon.

    Day 10: Salento, Coffee Farm

    In the morning will visit a wonderful, typical shadow coffee farm to learn about the coffee plantations and production process, as well as about the culture and customs around this activity.The Ocaso Coffee Farm is a fantastic place for birding. There are a lot of fantastic bird species there, such as the Green Honeycreeper, Acorn woodpecker, Bay headed Tanager, and Green Jay, among many others.

    We'll leave Salento after lunch and arrive to the El Peñón Hotel in Cali around 6:00 pm.

    Day 11
